Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from July 27 to Sunday. Ten of those drivers were involved in an accident. Two drivers were underage.

Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from July 27 to Sunday. Ten of those drivers were involved in an accident. Two drivers were underage.

Kona officers arrested six drivers and South Kohala officers nabbed one motorist. Nine motorists were arrested in South Hilo, while Puna officers arrested six drivers and Ka‘u officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 599 DUI arrests compared with 713 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.

The 877 major accidents so far this year compare with 932 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.9 percent.

There have been 13 fatalities so far this year on the island, compared to eight last year. This is a 62.5 percent increase.

To date, five fatalities have been blamed on drugs and three on a combination of drugs and alcohol.
